Art of Speaking Science – Becoming an Expert Presenter

The BioScience Partnership is happy to offer the following training sessions for our partners and their employees. Due to a grant from the PA Department of Labor and Industry, the workshops are free to the BioScience Partnership.

Presented by: Lisa B. Marshall
Location: BioRexis, King of Prussia
Date: July 10, 2007 - 9:00am to 5:00pm

Today, you need more than good ideas to get ahead; just as important is the ability to make clear, concise, and compelling presentations.

As you know, in science, your work is not completed until it has been communicated. Of course, no research scientist would ever, in their wildest dreams, send out a paper without first writing several drafts, reviewing each one, spell checking, editing, and getting feedback from several colleagues.

Effective scientific presentations are equally important, if not more important because often new ideas are presented for the first time in the form of a talk.

Using real examples from the bioscience community, this workshop will present information on how to organize, deliver and design professional presentations. Topics include: how to plan and structure a presentation, how to deliver using eye contact, gestures and vocal variety and how to create effective slides.

Participants will learn how to:

     * Gain attention in your first minute of speaking
     * Use effective speech organization
     * Reduce nervousness
     * Be persuasive
     * Improve body language
     * Connect with your audience
     * Rehearse more effectively
     * Improve your voice quality
     * Create efficient and effective scientific slide graphics
     * Manage the Q & A period
     * Reduce your preparation time
     * Develop a long-term improvement plan

You will be provided tips and guidelines on each aspect of effective scientific speaking. These tips will not only be provided live during the workshop, but also in detail via a private participant Art of Speaking Science - Expert Presenter™ workshop website.

There is no greater secret weapon in science than to know how to engage and persuade people. In a nutshell, this is what you will learn in the Art of Speaking Science – Becoming an Expert Presenter workshop.
